Languages

Virgen de Gracia International Diocesan School of Granada is an English bilingual schoolhaving the seal of excellence 450+. It is the guarantee of us as a fully certified school qualified to develop all the educational stages we offer, from Early Childhood Education to A Levels (Bachillerato), both in English and Spanish.

In addition to the learning of these two languages, our students have the possibility of adding to their linguistic enrichment two more languages: German and French.

Since the 2012-2013 school year, our school is bilingual. We use an integrated, interdisciplinary, meaningful and relevant approach to improve the student’s learning, in which, apart from the linguistic matters, non-linguistic areas are taught in English: psychomotricity and music in Early Childhood Education, Social Sciences and Natural Sciences, Physical Education, Music and Art, in Primary Education. In Secondary Education,Mathematics, Geography and History, Music and Physical Education are the subjects taught in English whereas Business and Scientific Culture are the bilingual ones.

Our goal is to introduce multilingualism (English, French and German), once we have completed the process of implementing bilingualism in English.

Bilingualism in English means:

  • The curricular and organizational model contains the principles of the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL).
  • The European recommendations on this subject reflected in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages developed by the Council of Europe are considered.
  • We elaborate an integrated curriculum of the languages, as well as the tools necessary for the integrated learning of contents and foreign languages within the framework of its educational project, which includes the following aspects:

1. Strategies that promote the learning of contents in a foreign language, within the framework of the curriculum objectives established for the general learning.

2. The design of communicative learning tasks that are implemented in the classroom to help students master the basic skills of language competence, both oral and written, in accordance with the related learning objectives for each level of competence. To achieve these objectives, the use of the European Language Portfolio (PEL) is promoted.

3. Insertion of the students’ principle of linguistic competence for the development of the key competences.

4. Inclusion of communicative activities in all the languages learnt in order to encourage the development of the key competences in each of the languages taught in the school.

5. Bonds between the different languages are established, unifying the linguistic terminology and basing the methodological approaches on a communicative approach.

Our goal is to introduce multilingualism (English, French and German), once we have completed the process of implementing bilingualism in English.
